Common questions
Is there a limit on how long I can record?
No. Yap imposes no minute cap on recording or transcription, on the free tier or on Pro. The practical limit is free space on your iPhone — Yap warns you before you get close and refuses to start a recording it cannot finish safely.
Does Yap work offline?
Yes, with one first-run exception. Recording, transcription, AI Notes, search by meaning, and export all run on your iPhone, and none of them sends your content anywhere.
The exception is that Yap's bundled neural models ship encrypted, and the first time each one is used Apple's system service fetches its decryption key from Apple. That happens once per install, carries none of your content, and is cached on your device afterwards. If you are offline at that moment, Yap falls back rather than failing — search uses keyword matching until the key arrives. Recording and transcription are unaffected either way.
Where do my recordings go?
They stay on your iPhone. There is no Yap account and no Novarynix server. Optional iCloud sync uses your own private iCloud database and covers transcripts and notes — not the original audio. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
Will my recordings be in my iPhone backup?
Yes, unless you turn off Back Up Recordings in Settings. Turning it off means a lost or replaced iPhone will not restore your recordings.
The transcript got a name or a word wrong.
Correct it in the note. Yap keeps the correction linked to the original audio, rebuilds the AI Note from your corrected text, and remembers the spelling for future recordings. You can also use Transcribe Again to re-run the whole recording, including in a different language.
Transcription stopped partway, or my note says it failed.
The recording itself is safe — Yap records in a format that stays playable through the last written moment even after a crash. Open the note and use Transcribe Again. If Yap was interrupted mid-recording, it offers to recover the audio the next time you open it.
I don't see live words while recording.
Live transcription is available in the languages Apple's on-device transcriber supports. In other languages Yap transcribes after you stop, which needs a one-time Download Speech Model in Settings. Yap never starts that download on its own.
My AI Notes look simpler than I expected.
AI Notes are generated by Apple Intelligence, which requires a supported iPhone. On other devices Yap uses its own on-device summarizer, which selects sentences from your transcript instead of writing new ones.
How do I get my notes out of Yap?
Settings → Export All Notes writes your whole library as a zip of Markdown (with folder structure and a linked index) or plain text. Plain text is free. A single note can also be exported as text, Markdown, PDF, SRT subtitles, or its original audio.
I deleted a note by mistake.
Deleted notes stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days with their audio, transcript, and AI Note. Restore it from there.
I paid but Yap still shows the free tier.
Settings → Restore Purchases, using the same Apple Account that bought Pro. If that does not resolve it, email us.
How do I cancel Pro?
Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone. Cancelling stops the next renewal. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Am I allowed to record this meeting?
That depends on where you are and who is present, and it is your call to make — recording rules differ by country and state, and many require everyone to agree. Yap cannot determine or obtain consent for you.
